New Children’s Librarian

We would like to introduce you to Crystal Wanker, the new Children’s Librarian at Lincoln Carnegie Library. Lynette Gross retired mid-November after 5 years of service.

Crystal moved to Lincoln two years ago and enjoys being part of the small-town community. “I’m looking forward to getting to know the people of Lincoln better, especially the children. There isn’t a better feeling than helping a young person develop a love for reading. Books really can take you anywhere.”

Crystal lives in Lincoln with her husband, Troy, who works at Walker Grain, and Sarge, her Chihuahua puppy.

Story time will continue to be held on Wednesdays at 10am. Come on by and say “hi”.

For those who love the convenience of downloading ebooks and audiobooks to their personal electronic devices, the opportunity to sign on with two new vendors is underway.

The State Library of Kansas is pleased to announce the Kansas EZ Library of digital books available to all Kansas library users. Acting on behalf of Kansas libraries, the State Library has entered into agreements with OneClickDigital (for audiobooks) and 3M (for eBooks).

OneClickDigital for audiobooks is available via the State Library. Books can be accessed at the Kansas EZ Library site, www.kslib.info/digitalbooks. Users must have a Kansas Library card that can be requested at the Lincoln Carnegie Library.

Regular users of the download service will find the new interface with OneClickDigital much simpler and faster to use. Video and written tutorials are available at the Kansas EZ Library site to assist individuals in using the new service.

In addition, the State Library will begin offering an ebook solution through 3M Cloud Library soon. Updates for the beginning of this service can be found on the Kansas EZ Library site.

November 2011 Board Meeting Minutes

Lincoln Carnegie Library Board of Trustees

November 7, 2011

Members Present: Pat Florence, Jerry Philbrick, Kathy Moss, Deb Breneman, Lynne Metz, Anne Grace

Pat Florence called the meeting to order. Kathy moved to accept the October minutes as written. Anne Grace seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Librarian’s Report:

Nancy reported the Friends of the Library book sale raised $133. The secretary

will send a thank you to the Friends.

Ottawa County Library reported a damaged book returned to their library on inter-library loan. When the invoice for the replacement arrives, Nancy will contact the patron to pay for a new book.

A patron questioned our “Happy Holidays” sign. Nancy told her that the Friends of the Library Group takes charge of any decorations.

Nancy served on the CKLS grant committee to issue $30,000 in grants for the coming year. Each year a different area of need is considered.

Nancy attended the Fall Assembly in Salina. The topic was advocacy and marketing your library. The State Librarian reported a 42% drop in state funding since 2001.

The ability to download audio books, music and more is projected to be available December 1. Games will be available after the first of the year. CKLS has made Play-
Away Audiobooks available. These are small, portable units that a patron can use while walking, bicycling, etc. Any Continuing Ed money left can be used to purchase two E-book readers and ten books. We have $260 in the account. Nancy attended the Reader Advisory Workshop in Topeka.

Nancy presented the board with a proposal for a new work schedule. It would increase the Wednesday night hours to 7pm, and increase the lunch break on Saturday from 30 to 60 minutes. See attached sheet.

Old Business:

Anne Grace and Kathy Moss volunteered to attend the Trustee-Librarian workshop November 15 in Mankato.

Jerry moved to pay the current bills. Lynne seconded the motion. Motion carried.

New Business:

Applications for the children’s librarian were reviewed. Three were chosen to interview. Lynne will contact the candidates for interviews on Thursday, Nov 10 beginning at 4pm. Anne will contact their references.

Nancy’s proposal for new hours was discussed. She stated she would no longer work Saturdays as she has done for the past ten years. Lynne moved to accept new hours. Anne seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed.

Anne moved to go into executive session from 6:00 pm to 6:30 pm to discuss personnel and salary. Deb seconded. Motion carried.

Jerry moved to adjourn. Deb seconded the motion. Meeting was adjourned.

Pat Florence called the special meeting to order.

Lynne moved to go into executive session to discuss personnel for 30 minutes.

Deb Breneman seconded the motion. Motion carried.

The board went into executive session at 7:02 pm.

The board came out of executive session at 7:32 pm.

Jerry moved that we seek a new children’s librarian to work the same hours as the present children’s librarian. Deb Breneman seconded. Motion carried.

Lynne will write a classified advertisement for the Lincoln Sentinel newspaper to be run October 19 and 26^th. Job applications should be on file at the library. Pat will talk to Nancy to make them available.

Deb Breneman moved to change the November board meeting from November 1 to November 7. Deb Beckmeyer seconded. Motion carried.

Jerry questioned the budget report stating $30,400 has been received from the city. He stated that the city’s allotment for this year was $37,000.

Jerry moved to adjourn. Kathy seconded. Motion carried.

Lincoln Carnegie Library Board of Trustees Meeting

Pat Florence called the meeting to order. Lynne moved to amend the September minutes, changing the dates of the Fall Assembly in Salina to 10/11/11-10/12/11. Kathy seconded. Motion carried.

Librarian Report:

Nancy provided print outs of an online training program for trustees and library directors called ALTAFF Trust Academy. She encouraged all trustees to take advantage of this free on line instruction. Trustee librarian workshops are scheduled November 15 at Mankato and November 17 at Russell. Brochures from CKLS were given to trustees.

Changes made to New Policy Handbook 9/6/11 were distributed.

The Lincoln Leadership class visited the library in September.

KanEd, which provides state funding for library internet, is in danger of legislative cuts. Nancy presented the participation agreement from KanEd and a paper ensuring that we provide internet filtering of undesirable material. We are encouraged to write our senator and representative in favor of keeping funding for KanEd.

Nancy requested the purchase of two table top book racks. The total of $106.00 is available in memorial money. They would be used on the east side of the elevator display table.

Lynnette presented her letter of resignation. Her last work day will be November 16, 2011. All members expressed regret at her decision.

Old Business:

Nancy reported the Lincoln Sentinel Republican newspapers were picked up September 14. The microfilms will be completed mid November. Storage in a metal container was suggested for the duplicate copy.

All the limestone blocks were sold to Kerry and Kathy Jo Smith.

New Business:

Anne moved to approve this month’s bills. Kathy seconded. Motion carried.

Kathy moved to purchase two tabletop racks with memorial funds. Lynne seconded. Motion carried.

Deb moved to sign the KanEd participation agreement for the coming year. Anne seconded. Motion carried.

Nancy presented two proposals regarding filling the children’s librarian position. The board went into executive session from 5:40 pm to 5:58 pm to discuss the proposals.

It was decided to review the proposals individually and meet at 4:30pm, November 1 for executive session before the 5:00pm trustee meeting.

Jerry moved to adjourn. Kathy seconded. Motion carried.

Culinary Mysteries

Culinary Mysteries are usually cozies that prominently feature food and cooking-sometimes with the recipes included. And like a Cozy, the body is often offstage, and most of the time the author does not explicitly describe the death or any violence. The sleuths are almost always amateurs who have sniffed out a murder or crime that needs to be solved. The detective may dine well, or may run a catering service, restaurant, or bakery. The sleuth is usually, but not always a woman, who solves the mystery through intuition and her knowledge of human nature. Small-town settings and gossip are integral parts of these savory stews of murder and mayhem.

The Library has Culinary Mysteries by the following authors: Laura Child, Diane Mott Davidson, Joann Fluke, Tamar Myers, Nancy Pickard and G. A McKevett. A complete lists of books can be find in the card catalog under Lists.

Lincoln Carnegie Library Board of Trustees Meeting

Pat Florence called themeeting to order. It was moved andseconded to amend the August minutes, changing the city allotment from $854 to$37,854 for 2012. Motion carried.

Librarian Report:

1. Nancyreported that World Pest control sprayed for bugs the middle of August and itseems to be effective.

2. One of the patron computers has been brokensince the middle of July. Dell sent two separateservicemen to fix it. Both replaced themother board, but it is still inoperable. The warranty is good until 12/1/2011. Another service call is anticipated.

3. Senator Jay Emler and three representativesfrom CKLS visited our library in August. Concerns of decreasing state funds for public libraries and appreciationof the popular courier service were discussed.

4. All County newspapers are ready to be sent tothe Norton Correctional Facility for microfilming. It was suggested to purchase an original anda duplicate. The original is to bestored in a fire-safe facility to be determined and the copy may be used forpatrons of the library. Nancywill check into the best means of storing the original film to preserve it. Thecost will run between $900 and $1000. The State Historical Society has early 1900s newspapers from Sylvan,Beverly and Lincoln. In the future wewould like to obtain copies of these.

5. Nancyrequested to attend the following meetings:

9/13/11 Pathfinder Automation System Tips andTricks meeting in Great Bend

10/11/11 Fall Assembly in Salina

11/4/11 Readers Advisory workshop in Topeka

There is $546 remaining ofthe $1000 budgeted for continuing education by CKLS. Whatever we don’t use by the end of the yearwill be sent back to CKLS.

6. Nancy and Lynnette presented the new jobdescriptions for Director and Children’s

Librarian.

7. Nancypresented the monthly report. Deb questionedan apparent increase in the Building & Contents insurance payment to theCity of Lincoln. Nancy reported that last year’s portion was$1850. The coming year’s amount is$2425.

Old Business:

1. Pat reported that Joe and Debbie Ortiz hadmoved the limestone blocks to form the north flower beds. Lynne will send a thank you from theboard. The leftover stones are piled bythe curb. It was moved (Deb) andseconded (Anne) to sell them for $15 apiece. Motion carried.

New Business:

1. It was moved (Kathy) and seconded (Lynne) tosend Nancy tothe three meetings she requested. The motion carried.

2. Pat reported that a member of the Friends ofthe Library had donated $1000 to the library and agreed to put that money towardthe microfilming of the newspapers. Lynne will write a thank you to the Friends board.

3. It was moved (Anne) and seconded (Lynne) topay the August bills. Motion carried.

4. The Board approved the new Director andChildren’s Librarian job descriptions presented by Nancy and Lynette.

5. Nancypresented ideas updating the Employee Policy Page IV-1:

Beginning Employment, delete (See Appendix A)and (and in October thereafter).

Complaints Against LibraryPersonnel, delete (person) and replace with (Board Member).

Page IV-2: Termination of Employment -- 2) delete(failure to meet production standards)

Page IV-3: Salaries and Wages -- 5^thparagraph, will read as “The only exceptions to this rule are meeting the bookvan, attending library board meetings and substituting for the otherlibrarian.” Delete paragraph 7 (Librarians shall be paid $15 for each programpresented to civic organizations and clubs on behalf of the library).

Page IV-4: Payroll Procedure -- Change paragraph 3 toread “The President or Vice President will approve the completed time sheets atthe end of the month.”

Change paragraph 4 to read“The President, Secretary or Treasurer (2 officers) will sign thepaychecks. Etc.

Page IV-7: Add Foodand Drink Employees have the rightto prepare and eat lunch in the meeting room.

Pat Florence called themeeting to order. It was moved andseconded to amend the July minutes to include the following: the June bills were approved as submitted.

Librarians’ Report:

1. Nancythanked Jerry for fixing the south door so that it would open more easily. Jerry noted that there is no automatic openerfor our handicapped entrance.

2. On August 19, our library will host ameeting between CKLS representatives and Kansassenator Jay Emler. The purpose is forlegislators to visit libraries in their district and form a betterunderstanding of their needs.

3. Nancynoted that the city budget printed in the Lincoln Sentinel Republican showedthe library receiving $37,854 for 2012, a 2.3% increase. The budget will be approved at the August orSeptember city council meeting.

4. Ten young adults and ten adultsparticipated in the summer reading programs.

5. Nancyreported that Sec IV of the handbook dealing with job description needs to beaddressed. It is outdated and she andLynnette will have an updated version for the September meeting.

6. Lynnette reported that 68 childrenparticipated in the summer reading program. The number of books checked out was down this summer. Kids’ logs showed time spent reading ratherthan number of books read. Prizes werebooks to keep.

Old Business:

1. Nancyreported that the light bulbs out in the emergency exit are wired into theunit. She will contact the city men orWeiss Fire Extinguisher people to investigate further.

2. Lynne reported that Dennis Cross is outof the state at the present time. Shewill ask him about cutting the limestone north of the building. Stepping stones were purchased for the northdoorway. Trash is going out the southside using the ramp instead of the north side.

New Business:

Deb Breneman moved and KathyMoss seconded the motion to pay the July bills.

The next meeting will beSeptember 6, 2011 at 5pm. Jerry movedthe meeting be adjourned and Kathy Moss seconded it. Motion carried.
